I am choosing music and its incorporation in the classroom. Music as its used in class to help students learn subjects and music as an extra curricular. I am interested in finding out what the benefits of having music in schools are and what we stand to loose if music and arts programs are cut.
Top 5 Things I Learned:
1. Children in schools with music education receive many benefits. Children in schools with music are shown to get higher test scores, be less likely to use drugs, and be more proficient in math. They are also more likely to enjoy success in college, post-graduate work and in their careers. The benefits of music education for children are consistent across various socio-economic groups.
they improve in many areas, some are:
Intellect
Music in schools has been shown to have a great impact on children's intellectual development. Learning music is proven to help kids develop the thinking skill necessary for learning and understanding mathematics. A study published in Neurological Research showed that a group of children who were trained in piano and math software scored 27 percent higher on math tests than students who only received instruction in the math software. A 10-year study conducted at UCLA shows that students in music education programs score higher on tests across subject areas. Schools with music education programs have nearly 20 percent higher graduation rates than school without music training; these schools also have nearly a 10 percent higher attendance rate.
Physical
Music is proven to help children develop coordination and other gross motor skills. Older children gain from learning to perform rhythms as part of music education. According to the Center for Timing, Coordination, and Motor Skills, this translates into students with music education being able to move faster and more precisely both physically and intellectually.
Expression
Children who have music education in their schools learn an important outlet for expression that children without access to music education don't have. In a direct comparison between students with music education and those without, a study conducted by K.L. Wolff found that first graders who were in music class daily scored higher on creativity tests than students without music education.
Language Arts
Music education in schools is also shown to give children, especially young children, an advantage in language development. For elementary school aged children, a study conducted in Scotland and published in the Journal of Research in Reading seems to indicate that music education does help with reading skills. For six months, as part of the study, one group of children received music education while another group received discussion training. At the end of the study, those students in music education scored better on reading tests while the other group's scores did not change.
Discipline
Many advocates of music education will cite the discipline students develop through music education as one benefit of music in schools. Research does seem to bear out this claim. In one example, schools with music education programs have nearly 20 percent higher graduation rates than school without music training, these schools also have nearly a 10 percent higher attendance rate.
2. when musicians are playing music and doing improve parts of their brain that controls self-expression and inhibition turn on. playing music and doing art makes a students more intelligent, as music and art greatly help other academic subjects.
3 . music and other passions create a state of pure invovment and ultimately being in that flow of music is what makes people truly happy and itmakes life worth living.

4listening to specific types of music is proven to be relaxing. Baroque music in general, with average tempos of 50-70 beats per minute (b.p.m.), was optimal for learning. This music also provided health benefits such as lower muscle tension, lower blood pressure, and a slower pulse rate. Besides being calming and increasing attention span, certain types of classical music can be a powerful catalyst in the creative process.
